Almond Blossoms

Etching. Image size: 8” high x 10” wide. Paper size: 11” high x 15” wide.

A study in perseverance, as this is the second life of this plate. It was originally created as a still life of dried grape vines and leaves. The lines were drawn using multiple wooden styluses with carved tips of different widths. This was done so that the acid etch could be accomplished in a single immersion. Years later, the grape leaves were removed (by scraping and burnishing), and the blossoms were added in a new etch.

When David inks and wipes the plate, he intentionally leaves some ink (known as plate tone or surface tone) in the background. The plate has no aquatint, so the tone is different on each print. Additionally, he uses cotton swabs to carefully remove the plate tone from inside the blossoms, thus giving a bit of contrast or pop between the blossoms and the background.

Edition of 12 in single ink color on varied paper with 2 Artist Proofs. Please contact David to purchase or for more information. Prices do not include sales tax and shipping.
